Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 August 2026
1. Who is responsible
The controller of any personal data processed through this website and the BOTIA app is ServiceHub, Kolvelseweg 165, 5025 JD Tilburg, Netherlands. KvK 42023784. For any privacy matter, write to privacy@botia-safefood.com.
2. What BOTIA does
BOTIA is a food transparency tool. It reads ingredient lists from food labels and explains them using scientific and regulatory sources. BOTIA does not track you, does not build profiles, and does not sell or monetise data.
3. What stays on your device
Most of what BOTIA does never leaves your device:
- Label scanning — text recognition runs locally on your phone. The photograph and the ingredient list are not sent to any server.
- Ingredient analysis — the rules engine and the ingredient database are bundled inside the app and run offline.
- Scan history — the app keeps a limited record of your recent scans in your phone's local storage, so you can review them. It is never uploaded. Deleting the app deletes it.
- Language preference — stored in your browser's local storage so the site opens in your language.
4. What leaves your device
There is one part of BOTIA that does send data outside your device, and you should know exactly how it works.
When you type a question into the assistant on this website, the text you write is sent to a processing server operated by us and from there to DeepSeek, the language model provider that generates the answer. DeepSeek is based outside the European Union. Please do not enter personal, health or identifying information into the chat.
The chat does not send your name, email, IP-based identity or scan history. Only the message you write. Conversations are not stored by BOTIA. The number of questions you have asked in a session is kept temporarily in your browser and disappears when you close the tab.
5. Sensitive information
The Muslim Choice and Woman modules deal with information that could reveal religious beliefs or health concerns. That analysis runs entirely on your device. BOTIA does not record, transmit or infer your religion, gender or health status. Selecting a module is not stored anywhere outside your phone.
6. Cookies and storage
This website does not use cookies. It uses your browser's local storage for the language preference, and session storage for the state of the chat while the tab is open. There are no advertising cookies, no tracking pixels and no third-party analytics.
7. Third parties
BOTIA relies on a small number of external services:
- GitHub Pages — hosts this website. Like any web host, it processes the technical connection data needed to serve a page.
- Cloudflare Workers — relays chat messages to the language model. It does not store conversations.
- DeepSeek — generates the assistant's answers. Your message is processed under their own terms and privacy policy.
- Google — if account sign-in is enabled in the app, Google manages the credentials. BOTIA never sees your password.
No data is shared with advertisers, data brokers or analytics platforms.
8. International transfers
Sending a chat message means the text you wrote is transferred outside the European Economic Area. This happens only when you choose to use the chat, and only with the content you type. If you prefer that nothing leaves the EEA, simply do not use the assistant — every other part of BOTIA works without it.
9. Legal basis
Under the GDPR, BOTIA processes data on these bases:
- Performance of the service you requested — reading a label and returning the corresponding information.
- Your consent — for the language preference, and for using the chat assistant, which you activate deliberately.
10. Retention
BOTIA does not keep a database of users. Scan history and language preference live on your device until you delete them or uninstall the app. Chat messages are not retained by BOTIA once the answer has been returned.
11. Your rights
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict and port your data, and to object to processing. Because BOTIA holds no user database, most of these rights are exercised directly on your device by clearing the app's data. For anything else, write to privacy@botia-safefood.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
12. Children
BOTIA is not directed at children under 16 and does not knowingly process their data.
13. Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated when BOTIA changes what it processes — for example when the newsletter or the app subscription launches. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
