What it is
A five-carbon polyol, or sugar alcohol, consisting mainly of D-xylitol and used as a bulk sweetener and humectant in sugar-reduced foods.
Why BOTIA flags it
BOTIA flags E967 because it is a bulk polyol, not just an intense sweetener. EU rules require a laxative-effect warning above 10% added polyols. WHO's 2023 recommendation on non-sugar sweeteners explicitly excludes polyols.
