What it is

Soy is a protein-rich legume. On a label it may appear as soy, soya, soy flour, soy protein, or soy protein concentrate or isolate. It is used to add protein and also to give body and structure to some foods.

Why BOTIA flags it

In several studies in women, a higher intake of soy was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer, and in survivors it was associated with lower mortality and recurrence. The association was clearer in populations that habitually eat more soy; other studies at moderate intakes did not find the same result. Isoflavone supplements did not show the same effects as soy foods.

BOTIA CAN

  • Detect soy, soya, soy flour and the soy protein declarations when they are on the label.
  • Explain what the studies found and show the Woman information layer.

BOTIA CANNOT

  • Determine how much soy a food contains, or how that compares with the intakes in the studies.
  • Determine how many isoflavones a soy ingredient carries, since the label does not say and it differs between whole soy foods and protein isolates.
