What it is
Flavouring preparations produced from smoke or smoke condensates and added to foods to provide or reinforce a smoky flavour. They are distinct from merely describing a food as traditionally smoked.
Why BOTIA flags it
BOTIA flags explicit smoke-flavouring declarations because EU authorisations for smoke-flavouring primary products were not renewed and transitional periods depend on food category. EFSA's 2023 assessments could not rule out genotoxicity concerns for the renewal products assessed. That regulatory/scientific context is not a claim that any product described as smoked contains an added smoke flavouring.

- Detect explicit smoke flavouring, smoke flavoring, liquid smoke and closely related declared ingredient terms.
- Explain the EU regulatory transition and distinguish added smoke flavourings from traditional smoking when the label gives that information.
BOTIA CANNOT
- Infer that a product contains added smoke flavouring merely because its name says smoked or smoky.
- Determine which primary smoke-flavouring product or dose was used unless the label identifies it.
