Protein

What it is

Protein is a nutrient made of amino acids. Foods can contain very different amounts and combinations of these amino acids.

Why BOTIA flags it

The nutrition table tells you how much protein is declared, but not its amino-acid composition or quality. BOTIA keeps that declared amount separate from the regulatory rules and evidence that give the number context.

BOTIA CAN

  • Read the protein value declared on the nutrition label and preserve its unit and basis.
  • Connect the declared value with the applicable regulatory information and documented evidence.

BOTIA CANNOT

  • Determine the amino-acid profile or protein quality from the declared protein value alone.
  • Determine an individual's protein requirement from the nutrition label.
  • Treat an undeclared protein value as zero.
