Natural Flavourings

What it is
A legal category of flavourings whose flavouring component comes from natural source materials and is obtained using permitted physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes.
Why BOTIA flags it
“Natural flavouring” is a legal category, not a description of what the product tastes like. It can be obtained by physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes from materials of plant, animal or microbiological origin. If the label simply says “natural flavouring”, it does not have to come from the food whose flavour it evokes. Only when it says, for example, “natural strawberry flavouring” must at least 95% of the flavouring component come from strawberry. As with any flavouring, the label may not tell you which individual substances it contains or how many.
BOTIA CAN
- Detect “natural flavouring”, “natural flavour”, “natural X flavouring” and equivalent declarations when they appear on the label.
- Explain the legal difference between generic “natural flavouring” and “natural X flavouring”, including the EU 95% source rule.
BOTIA CANNOT
- Determine the exact source material when the label only says “natural flavouring”.
- Identify the individual flavouring substances or their proportions when the manufacturer does not declare them.
