Monounsaturated fat
monounsaturated fatty acids, MUFA
What it is
Monounsaturated fat is a type of fat whose fatty acids contain one double bond. Oleic acid is one of the most common examples.
Why BOTIA flags it
Monounsaturated fat forms part of total fat, but it is not always declared separately. BOTIA keeps a declared value distinct from total fat and from the regulatory information and evidence used to interpret it.
BOTIA CAN
- Read the monounsaturated fat value when it is declared on the nutrition label and preserve its unit and basis.
- Show that the value forms part of total fat rather than being added to it.
- Connect the declared value with the applicable regulatory information and documented evidence where relevant.
BOTIA CANNOT
- Determine the amount of individual monounsaturated fatty acids from the combined value.
- Calculate monounsaturated fat reliably from total fat and other declared fat values.
- Treat an undeclared monounsaturated fat value as zero.
