Monk Fruit

monk fruit, monk fruit extract, monkfruit, luo han guo, luo han guo extract, Siraitia grosvenorii extract, mogroside, mogrosides, mogroside V

What it is

A fruit-derived sweetening ingredient from Siraitia grosvenorii. Commercial monk-fruit sweeteners are typically extracts rich in sweet mogrosides.

Why BOTIA flags it

BOTIA flags monk fruit sweetener because it is not the fruit itself: it is a purified, much more concentrated extract. JECFA evaluated it in 2026 and set a temporary limit, because it estimated that children's exposure could reach about four times that limit if it were used at the maximum proposed levels. This is a concern about that scenario, not about every product that contains it.

BOTIA CAN

  • Detect monk fruit, luo han guo, Siraitia grosvenorii extract and common mogroside declarations.
  • Show the sweetener context while keeping U.S. GRAS status distinct from other jurisdictions.

BOTIA CANNOT

  • Determine mogroside concentration or sweetness contribution when it is not declared.
  • Assume every Siraitia-containing product has the same extract composition or regulatory status.
