BOTIA — Lead ingredient icon

Lead

lead, Pb, plomo

What it is

A toxic heavy metal environmental contaminant causing neurological and reproductive damage.

Why BOTIA flags it

Lead can cross the placenta, and the developing nervous system is especially sensitive. Studies have observed later pubertal development in girls, but that is an association — not a proven effect of lead.

BOTIA CAN

  • Flag food types historically prone to lead contamination.
  • Explain prenatal and childhood susceptibility. Individual exposure is measured with a blood lead test; a food label cannot tell you someone's blood lead level.

BOTIA CANNOT

  • Detect the exact lead concentration from scanned label text alone.
  • Determine if lead migrated from packaging materials.
