Guar gum
E412
E412, guar gum, gum cyamopsis, guar flour, goma guar
What it is
A galactomannan-rich gum milled from the endosperm of guar seeds. It disperses in water and is used to thicken, stabilise or emulsify foods.
Why BOTIA flags it
BOTIA flags E412 because the label shows the gum, not the amount or food category. EFSA found no concern at reported general uses, but insufficient data for specified infant foods led the EU to begin withdrawing those authorisations from 18 August 2026.
BOTIA CAN
- Detect E412 or Guar Gum on scanned labels.
- Flag potential risk of digestive discomfort for children under 8 years.
BOTIA CANNOT
- Confirm if the guar gum was partially hydrolysed.
- Determine if raw material contains pentachlorophenol or dioxin contaminants.
