What it is
A clear, viscous polyol liquid used as a humectant and sweetener.
Why BOTIA flags it
Glycerol attracts and retains water, which is why it keeps baked goods and gummies moist. In the European Union, since 2023, food-grade E422 can only be obtained from vegetable oils and fats. In other markets, other authorised forms of production exist, and the label does not say which. JECFA did not see a need to set a numerical limit.

- Detect E422 or Glycerol/Glycerine on scanned labels.
- Activate texture, animal, and Muslim choice layers.
BOTIA CANNOT
- Determine the production route or source outside the EU when the label does not state it.
- Detect 3-MCPD contaminants above the 0.1 mg/kg limit.
