Gelatine
Gelatine, gelatin, gelatina, gélatine, animal gelatine, pork gelatine, beef gelatine, fish gelatine, E441
What it is
A protein and gelling ingredient produced by partial hydrolysis of collagen from animal skin, bones and other connective tissues.
Why BOTIA flags it
Gelatine is collagen processed so that it dissolves and gels — it is found in gummies, yoghurts, mousses and medicine capsules. It is always of animal origin, and the label almost never says which species. The body digests it like any other protein.
BOTIA CAN
- Detect gelatine and explicit source terms such as pork, beef, bovine, fish or animal gelatine when they are declared.
- Explain that gelatine is always animal-derived and show the declared species when the label provides it; when it does not, BOTIA can identify the missing source traceability.
BOTIA CANNOT
- Identify the animal species when the ingredient list says only “gelatine”.
- Determine slaughter method or other source details that the manufacturer has not disclosed.
