What it is

A collective labelling category for substances and preparations used to give or modify taste or smell. A finished product may simply declare “flavouring” instead of listing each flavouring substance separately.

Why BOTIA flags it

“Flavouring” is one word that can cover substances from a European list of more than 2,500, without them having to be declared one by one. Behind it there may be one or many substances, plus solvents and carriers used to transport them — which can include alcohol or propylene glycol — and these do not necessarily have to appear separately either. Individual flavouring substances are evaluated on their own, but the label may not tell you which ones are present or where they come from.

BOTIA CAN

  • Detect generic terms such as flavouring, flavoring, aroma or natural flavouring when they are declared on the label.
  • Explain that a collective flavouring declaration may conceal the exact substances, their source and carriers such as ethanol or propylene glycol, and activate the Flavour and Muslim traceability layers.

BOTIA CANNOT

  • Identify the individual flavouring substances or carriers when the manufacturer declares only a collective term such as “flavouring” or “aroma”.
  • Determine the source or composition of an undeclared flavouring mixture from the collective label term alone.
