Energy

kilojoules, kilocalories, Calories

What it is

Energy is the amount of energy a food provides. Nutrition labels usually express it in kilojoules, kilocalories or both.

Why BOTIA flags it

The energy figure tells you the total amount declared, but not how that energy is distributed between fat, carbohydrate, protein or other energy-providing components. BOTIA keeps the declared value separate from the regulatory calculation rules and evidence used to interpret it.

BOTIA CAN

  • Read the energy value declared on the nutrition label and preserve its unit and basis.
  • Keep kilojoules and kilocalories separate when both are declared.
  • Connect the declared value with the applicable regulatory information and documented evidence where relevant.

BOTIA CANNOT

  • Determine the complete nutrient composition of a food from its energy value alone.
  • Determine an individual's energy requirement from the nutrition label.
  • Treat an undeclared energy value as zero.
